Self-Care: Beyond the Buzzword

This workshop hosted by North San Diego County NAACP is designed to empower participants by exploring strategies and tools that prioritize mental wellness while honoring cultural traditions, personal needs, and collective support. This workshop offers a safe space to explore and strengthen mental health practices that celebrates multigenerational identities, stories and experiences while paving the way for lasting wellness and empowerment.

Workshop Objectives

  • Define self-care in a culturally relevant context
  • Differentiate between meaningful and superficial self-care
  • Address the mental health stigma
  • Foster resilience and healing for themselves and others
  • Discuss tools for combating burn out while affirming boundaries

NAACP REP Dr. Shannon D. Morell

NSDC NAACP

Dr. Shannon D. Morell is passionate about serving the community and offering her gifts and talents to support growth and empowerment.  Originally from a small town of St. Francisville, Louisiana; she grew up  involved in many ministries of the church and knew her calling was teaching  and counseling the hurting and broken hearted. She is familiar with the  impact of intimate partner violence, substance misuse, suicide behavior, and religiosity that can negatively impact homes and families. She has made it her life goal to bring awareness and education to churches and organizations  to better equip them in being a safe place for those who are suffering. 

Shannon is a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and works as the Program Manager  for Camp Pendleton’s Community Counseling Program that services our military community. She  also is considered a Subject Matter Expert on suicide behavior and educations commands across the  county. She spends her time training new clinicians. She has a private practice and is in the works of  building a nonprofit “Ministry Women H.E.A.L.” that supports the healing and growing of women  in ministry from trauma and unspoken deep seeded pains. 

Shannon enlisted into the United States Navy at the age of 18, where she served as a journalist. After  serving she received her Bachelors in Social Psychology, her Masters in Counseling Psychology, and  recently her Doctorate in Marriage, Family, and Child Therapy. 

Shannon has three sons: Ethan (22), Elijah (20), and Emmanuel (19). Who are her greatest gifts  from God and whom she is quite proud of. She is also very transparent on the impact of divorce especially as a Christian and shares her own experience of growth, the affects of mental health on  marriage, and healing after a 21 year marriage. 

Her passion is helping people heal, be encouraged, and supporting the changing of their legacy for  the better.
